The success of Google has shown that simply having a good quality and informative web site on the internet is not sufficient. You will have to make sure that it is easily accessible to the public. There have been numerous attempts to categorize or classify the various websites on the internet.
Yahoo Directories was one of the first attempts to give a clear topic based overview of most important web sites on the internet. However, the sheer number of sites and topics has rendered such attempts obsolete. Right now, people use a standardized one size fits all solution in the form of search engines.
It is important to know what you are searching for to extract best performance from search engines. If you have a vague idea of what you need, you may or may not strike the right key words necessary to identify the information. This creates a bit of gamble in the search process. This may not be the perfect option but there is no other solution that works as well as search engines.
One can take a look at other methods of classifying large volumes of data. One can check out Yellow Pages and telephone directories and try this approach. However, the biggest complication involved here is that no telephone directory lists all the numbers in the entire world as a whole. It is impossible to categorize or classify the internet into regions or specific areas.
The entire network has to be treated as one big global network and searched accordingly. Until the right subcategories are discovered, search engines will remain the best way to access and search the internet.
